On May 16th of this year, a team from the Museum of Architecture in Budapest requested permission to present an album titled "Raise Me a Roof," featuring synagogues from the Carpathian arc, which included the synagogue from Târgu Mureș, with text in Hungarian and English. The co-author, Agnes Oszko, presented the volume with a video projection of its contents, accompanied by an introduction to the historical context by Mihai Spielmann, a historian, writer, and prominent figure in the cultural life of Târgu Mureș. The album, with its remarkable graphic design, also contains extremely relevant data regarding the evolution of synagogue architecture, which is novel even for the beneficiaries of the beautiful building erected in 1900. Along with the albums "The Mosaic Cult in Romania," published by Paideia Publishing House, Bucharest, 2018, and "Temples and Synagogues in Romania," edited in 2018 by Hasefer Publishing House, it serves as an argument (if one was still needed) for the renovation of this admirable historical monument. In the same vein, the Mureș County Museum invited us to participate in the Night of Museums, which we couldn't refuse, given that we have also assumed the role of citizens of the town.So we opened the doors of the synagogue and the museum (established in 2018) at 2 PM, and the reward, of course, was primarily the observation of the public's keen interest – a sincere and continuous dialogue with visitors of all ages, whose number (over 600 people) was unexpectedly large, putting the guides to a severe test. This is a gain for the Jewish community – and not only for that of Târgu Mureș – because the ultimate goal of these endeavors is to contribute to educating the public in accepting diversity and understanding the past, irreplaceable tools for combating antisemitism. Let's congratulate the volunteers who contributed to the success of this day: Prof. Gheorghe Diamantstein, Simona Grün, Dr. Erzsebet Benedek, student Andreea Lifschitz, Susana Sauber, along with Cristina Bordeianu and Maria Ioana Berte, volunteers from the county museum.
Vasile DUB, President of the Jewish Community of Târgu Mureș
